Pedro Barbeito lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Barbeito investigates how science and technology expand painting languages. Interested in science’s ability to visualize phenomena otherwise invisible to human eyes, Barbeito considers how these new visual forms of representation merge with painting’s ability to depict the world.
Specifically, Barbeito explores how painting can engage with and absorb digital imaging technologies and how this relationship can expand painting’s history and language. Scientific and astronomical visualizations appear in relation to perspectival space and abstraction in Barbeito’s Science/Astronomy Series, video game imagery in relation to historical landscape painting in Video Game/Landscape Series, as well as 2D and 3D software programs in relation to cubism in Cubism/Digital Imaging Series. In Science/Astronomy and Video Game/Landscape, Barbeito further complicates this analog/digital relationship by integrating laptops, 3D printing and laser etching with the painting process.
Barbeito received his MFA from the Yale School of Painting and Sculpture in 1996, and has exhibited his work internationally for the past seventeen years. He has held solo exhibitions at venues including 101/EXHIBIT, Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut, Basilico Fine Arts, Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York, Mario Diacono Gallery in Boston, Parra-Romero Gallery in Madrid, Charest-Weinberg Gallery in Miami and Galerie Richard in Paris. He has participated in group shows at the Rose Art Museum in Massachusetts, the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem, The Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art in Florida, the Museo Rufino Tamayo in Mexico City, Salon 94 Gallery in New York, ACME Gallery in Los Angeles and Whitechapel Gallery in London, among others.
