Michelle Hinebrook lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Filled with layers of intricate details, fragmented representations and explosive colors, Hinebrook’s paintings display a careful balance between painterly intuition and an understanding of optics, color theory and geometry. Big enough to envelop viewers, Hinebrook’s work attempts to capture movement within a deep and dynamic pictorial space composed of kaleidoscopic colors and shapes.
Underlying the physicality of her paintings is an interest in new imaging technologies. Hinebrook’s ideas are often inspired through an ongoing exchange between virtual and physical mediums. She begins by constructing compositions digitally, then translates each layer onto the canvas using an airbrush and paintbrush. She balances hard-edge elements with hand-drawn lines, painted fragments and loose gestures. This process reveals subtle manipulations in surface and texture.
Hinebrook completed her MFA in 2005 from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in eighteen solo shows and over fifty group shows at galleries such as Marlborough Gallery, Foley Gallery, Helen Nyborg Contemporary and 101/EXHIBIT. Her paintings also reside in various museums, corporate and private collections.
