Chambliss Giobbi lives and works in New York City.
Giobbi’s works are objects of psychological and physical mutation as well as testaments to a long relationship between the artist and his model. His collages result from a marathon photo session with his subject, from which he prints thousands of photographs. Tearing his prints, Giobbi then glues them, piece by piece, layer upon layer, to create the image.
At once linear and composed, then abrupt and splintered, Giobbi’s portraits become an intense and operatic compression of moments. Giobbi was a prolific composer of classical music for fifteen years—for which he received Guggenheim, NEA and NYFA fellowships—before turning to visual art. The notion of time and simultaneity in the development of musical ideas has become a central theme in his fractured, stop-frame images.
